Modern Foreign Languages
As a department, we are passionate about language learning. We encorporate a wide variety of engaging tasks and games, which not only build the four key skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking but also allow students to quickly communicate in useful sentences and paragraphs. The priority for planning is to ensure all students have the opportunity to participate and make progress, whilst receiving the appropriate level of challenge or support. We recognise the importance of building confidence, as well as offering a culturally-rich and stimulating curriculum. In a safe, supportive learning environment, the emphasis remains on communication not perfection in the first stages on learning.
Year 7 entry
When students start in year 7, they will study either French or Spanish for the full 3 years at Key Stage 3. By focussing on one language, students are able to make faster and higher levels of progress in order to put them in a strong position for GCSE should they choose to continue studying a language.
Enrichment languages
Should students wish to study a second language, they can opt to study either German or Japanese during the enrichment programme. This involves a lesson after school, as well as the usual Friday afternoon lesson. Students also study towards to Foreign Language Leader qualification which affords them the opportunity to teach some of their second language to younger students.
GCSE languages 2013
We are really excited to be able to offer our students the choice of studying either French, German, Spanish or Japanese at GCSE. A GCSE in languages allows
students to develop their communication skills as well as their grammatical understanding. In addition, they will learn more about the history and culture of the countries where the foreign language is spoken. Students are encouraged to express their opinions on topics such as Education, The World of Work, The World around us and Personal and Social Life. We use a wide variety of activities to engage students and increase vocabulary. Students are assessed on their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. Rapidough, Snakes and Ladders, Battleships, Speed dating,
Scrabble, Running Dictation and mini-whiteboard tasks are just some of the ways
students develop these skills. For each topic covered, students are supplied
with an extensive support booklet, written by staff. These booklets are the
ideal support for when students are extending their written and spoken passages.
