Again, not my own idea, this idea is stolen from Karen Whitehead. I've created a 'Three in a Row' game for Year 8s to practise describing where they live using 'new, old, beautiful, big and small.' Pupils have to roll some dice to get their coordinates, they then translate the sentence into French. If they are successful they place a counter on the square. The aim is to get three in a row. However, the pupils can knock each other's coordinates off by getting the same coordinates and translating the sentence. Usually, pupils say the sentence, however, I will ask pupils to write these sentences on a mini whiteboard.
I've created this speaking map to encourage more target language in my lessons.
Not my own idea, stolen from Karen Whitehead but adapted to French.
A good way to encourage pupils to add key words/phrases to their writing or speaking. The challenge cards are differentiated; red is the most difficult, orange for middle ability and green for lower ability. Give each pupil a card, their challenge is to include those words in their writing/speaking.
Here are some prestarters which I use to give pupils something to work on straight away. They're particularly useful if you know that your pupils are going to arrive at different times.
An idea I've stolen but a great revision tool for Year 7. Pupils work in groups, they roll two dice which provides them with coordinates. They find their square and translate the vocabulary into French. If they do this successfully they can place a counter on that square. The aim is to get three counters in a row. If a pupil lands on a square which already has a counter on it, they can knock that counter off by translating the sentences successfully themselves.
We have been using these dice for speaking practice and to encourage variety and creativity in written work. Student still need to add their own information at the end to complete their sentences.
